Greenbox Robotics, a Marina del Rey company founded in June 2017, wants to bring automation to the cannabis market by using a self-serve kiosk to dispense cannabis, according to the Los Angeles Business Journal. Two dispensary operators have signed on to use the product so far, including Erba Collective in Santa Monica and another in Arizona
Customers select products via a touchscreen and a robotic arm grabs the selected product. An app provides an up-to-date menu of products in the kiosk for shoppers before entering a dispensary. The kiosk accepts cash and debit cards, but does not accept credit cards since cannabis is illegal at the federal level and financial institutions oftentimes will not process cannabis transactions.
Dispensary owners pay Greenbox a $5,000 installation fee plus a $500 monthly maintenance fee.
Greenbox claims to be compliant with state regulations, and its machines and app use biometric facial recognition technology to verify customers.
