The Whitehall Public Library, in southwestern Pennsylvania, has debuted a health kiosk for seniors that provides blood pressure monitoring as well as pulse and grip strength assessment capabilities.

The self-monitoring kiosk, according to a Trib Live report, is part of a University of Pittsburgh research study aimed at whether seniors will embrace such technology when it comes to health management.

«It's an educational tool and a way to learn strategies,» Judith Matthews, research associate professor of nursing, told Trib Live. «The idea was really to enable older adults in a way that's safe for them. We really wanted to make this accessible to people in a place they might gather.»

The library, which debuted the kiosk in January, is the only library in the county featuring the research kiosk, according to the report.

Based on participant health data, the kiosk offers insight on everything from better communication with healthcare providers to setting personal goals as well as diet and exercise tips.
