European grocers test camera-based cashierless technology

Several European grocers are testing cashierless stores featuring cameras that track what shoppers pick, allowing them to pay without stopping at a checkout line, according to a Dow Jones News report.

The retailers hope the technology will cut costs and alleviate lines as they face competition from Amazon, which has already introduced cashierless stores in the U.S.

European efforts to use the technology in existing stores will be watched closely in the U.S.

Tesco, a U.K. grocer, will introduce cashierless technology next year while Carrefour SA in France is running tests and working with Qopius Technology, a French startup whose cameras can read labels on products. In addition, Shufersal, Israel's largest grocery chain, is testing a similar technology it hopes to introduce to all its stores if its own trial works out.
