Iloilo City in the Philippines has installed a touchscreen kiosk at its city hall to allow residents to conduct transactions for government services, such as paying for permit requirements, marking the first step to becoming a «smart city,» according to a Businessworld report.

The city is also exploring a mobile app for paying taxes and other city government transactions, said Francis Cruz, information systems officer.

The country's two major telecoms, Globe Telecoms, Inc. and Smart Communications Inc., plan to partner with the city to provide free Wi-Fi access in certain areas, Mayor Jerry P. Treñas announced Monday. The Wi-Fi access will cover public plazas, the metro, the City Hall, the Esplanade area and bike lanes along Sen. Benigno S. Aquino Jr. Avenue in the Mandurriao district.
