Toronto commerce student Ann Baek and paramedic Kevin Lau collaborated to compete in Samsung's Solve for Tomorrow contest in Toronto. They won the top prize for their AI-powered triage kiosk.

Baek and Lau have utilized AI-powered technology to simplify and expedite patient waitlists and improve the overall experience for hospital staff and patients being triaged, according to a Toronto Guardian news report.

«Technology is becoming one of the biggest industries in the world today with lots of innovation. The topic of hospital wait times came up as I was discussing my experience in the emergency room with Kevin [Lau],» Baek told the news outlet. «[We] thought it would be nice if there was something that could lift the burden off of some staff and also allow patients to be more assured of their treatment.»

The kiosk's features would include inputting demographic information and asking introductory questions during patient check-in. Baek and Lau also told the news outlet that they hope the triage kiosk will one day perform vital signs monitoring to support paramedics and offload delays.
