Next month, Target Corp. will begin the process of automating cash handling at its stores

The company will kick off the project with the installation of 500 cash recyclers from Retail Cash Solutions, a unit of U.K.-based vendor G4S PLC, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

Eventually, the recyclers will be rolled out to all of the retailer's 2,000 locations.

A Target spokesperson told WSJ that cash office tasks occupy one full employee shift per week, and that the cash recyclers will free up associates to «spend even more time helping our shoppers.»

The move by Target follows last year's shift by Walmart to automated cash recycling at its 4,700 U.S. stores, the report said.
