Alaska Airlines will replace its self-service check-in kiosks with kiosks that only print luggage tags as part of an overhaul of the check-in experience at Portland International Airport, according to an oregonlive.com report.

Passengers will have to print their boarding passes prior to coming to the check-in area or use a smartphone to check in, something the airline said three quarters of passengers are already doing.

Alaska Airlines boarding passes will not be available on the airport's common-use kiosks either.

The airline said the change will get people through the lobby faster and reduce paper use. There will still be customer service agents available to print passes at no extra charge.

It has also done away with printer kiosks at other airports including those in Las Vegas, Indianapolis and Cleveland, as well as Pacific Northwest destinations including Missoula, Montana and Boise, Idaho.
